How to start with risk under control

Updated: 25 October 2026.

The sequence below is arranged so your first mistake is a cheap one. The first two stages involve no money at all, and that is deliberate.

1. Finish the demo stage

Stockity's demo account carries a $10.000 practice balance. Use it until you can explain, in your own words, why a trade won or lost. While the explanation is still a hunch, this stage is not finished.

Record every trade: the reason you took the position, the result, and whether that reason held up. The record is what separates practice from activity without review.

2. Set your loss limit before you deposit

Decide on one number: the amount that can be lost in full without touching your obligations or your needs. Not an amount that merely stings — an amount that genuinely changes nothing.

That number is the ceiling for this activity as a whole, not an opening deposit to be topped up later. If you already plan to add to it, the limit is not real.

3. Start at the smallest size

A $1 minimum trade keeps the cost of learning low. Stay at that size until your records — not your memory — show consistent results across several weeks.

Scale up gradually, and only once a bad stretch is also in the record. A winning run at the start is not evidence of skill; the sample is simply too short.

Habits that keep you going

  • You stay within the limit you set for yourself.
  • You close the day on your plan, not on your mood.
  • You talk about this openly with the people close to you.
  • You use only the money you set aside for learning.

Those four habits separate the people who keep improving from the people who stop early. As long as you hold all four, you still have the time to get better.
